You and your pet are inseparable. It is a beloved family member that deserves the best in life. So when you travel, it's natural to want to take your best friend along with you. However, vacation travel can be stressful and uncomfortable for your two, four-legged or feathered friend. But with planning and preparation, you can keep your pet safe and happy. Here's how:
Traveling By Plane
Depending on the airline, your pet may be able to travel in the cabin with you for an additional fee. However, most animals will travel in the cargo hold. To minimize their stress levels and keep them safe, follow these tips:
1) Book direct flights whenever possible.
2) Make sure your pet's breed isn't restricted. Some short-nosed animals such as bulldogs and Persian cats are not permitted to fly for health reasons. Note that some very young animals might not be physically prepared for the stress of air travel.
3) Make an appointment with your pet's vet prior to travel to ensure vaccinations are up to date and obtain a health certificate.
4) At least one month before your flight, familiarize your pet with their travel carrier, which should be well-ventilated and large enough for them to stand, sit and turn around comfortably. Line it with some bedding and paper towels to absorb any mess.
5) Don't give your pet a sedative for the flight unless prescribed by a veterinarian.
6) Research your airline to see what quality of care your pet will receive during travel.
7) Ensure your pet is microchipped, has a collar and tags, and the carrier is marked "Live Animal'. Affix two sets of identification to the collar. One with your name, home address, and telephone number and the other with your name, address, and the telephone number of where you'll be staying.
8) Do not feed your pet for up to six hours before the flight to reduce the risk of travel sickness. However, give them small amounts of water. If you can, put ice cubes in a water tray attached to the inside of the pet carrier. Don't fill it up with water because it could spill during the flight.
9) When you arrive at your destination, open the carrier a soon as you can and check your pet thoroughly. If they show any signs of illness or injury, take them to a vet immediately.
Going On A Road trip
Pets shouldn't be left to roam free in a vehicle. It can be dangerous for them and a distraction to the driver. The safest way for a pet to travel in your car is in a well-ventilated crate or carrier anchored to the backseat with a seatbelt. Leave the front passenger seat for humans. If an airbag is deployed while your pet is in the front, it could injure or kill them. Make frequent stops during the journey if you have a dog so they can exercise, relieve themselves and eat. Avoid feeding your pet while they are inside a moving vehicle.
It is a good idea to get your pet used to the carrier and the car before you set out on a long drive. Therefore during the preceding weeks, take your pet on a series of short drives and gradually increase the time spent in the car.
Traveling By Sea
With a few exceptions, most cruise lines operate a no-pet policy. Usually, only service dogs for passengers with disabilities are allowed. Contact your cruise line in advance for details of its policies. If pets are permitted, ask about pet-friendly facilities.
If you're going on a boat and want to bring your dog, consider the following safety tips:
Get your dog used to the boat before sailing
Invest in a canine life jacket
Bring fresh water with you. Do not encourage your dog to drink sea or lake/river water
Apply sunscreen to your dog if they're going to be exposed to sunlight for several hours
Provide suitable shade
Have a plan in place for potty breaks
Pack a Pet Travel Kit
This is essential however you are traveling and should include such items as:
Food and treats
Water
Medication
Grooming supplies
Travel papers
Food bowl
Favorite toys
Pet First Aid kit (consult your vet for what you should include)
Litter box or waste bags
With these tips, your pet can travel safely and comfortably with you whether your vacation is a tropical island destination, a ski resort, or a mountain cabin.
